Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the ball?
There’s no ball in roller derby! Points get scores by passing the hips of the opposing blockers.
How can I join?
Twice a year we organize an open training, so you can start together with a group of new people. Did you miss our open training or do you want to start right now? Send us an e-mail at rrd.opentraining@gmail.com for other opportunities.
Is this a women only sport?
The sport and our league are mostly run by women* but we welcome people from different genders as well!
What do I need to join?
During trainings we wear a helmet, mouth guard, wristguards, elbowpads, kneepads and quad roller skates. During your first few trainings you’re able to borrow everything, but we do encourage you to get your own gear soon.
Do I need to know how to skate before joining?
No, not at all! If you join us after an Open Training we’ll first teach you all the basics of rollerskating. Strides, stops, falls, we’ll teach you everything you need to know in the first couple of weeks. And no physical contact until you’re ready!
What is the minimum age?
You have to be at least 16 to join our training.
What are the rules?
This video is a good basis for when you come to a game the first time:Â https://youtu.be/OId6gTd2LCM.
During most games we have announcers present who report everything they see on track.
The full rules of Flat Track Roller Derby can be found here:Â https://rules.wftda.com/.
What language is used at training?
Our trainings are in English, with Dutch explanations occasionally. This is due to the international character of the sport and the different nationalities on our teams.
